Talk of Fame Network

It’s Johnny Unitas week, with the former quarterback’s birthday on Saturday, May 7.

Unitas, who died of a heart attack on Sept. 11, 2002, would be celebrating his 83rd birthday if he were alive. Instead, we have Chris Willis of NFL Films celebrating it for us, paying tribute to Unitas in Pro Football Journal with a list of the best and brightest of books about a quarterback some consider the greatest in league history.

The books are listed in chronological order, beginning with Ed Fitzgerald’s “Johnny Unitas: The Amazing Success Story of Mr. Quarterback,” published in 1960, and ending with “In the Pocket: Johnny U and Me,” written by Unitas’ son, John Jr., with the help of Ed Brown.

In all, 12 books are listed, spanning the years from 1960 to 2014, and they’re summarized perfectly by Willis. Want more? You should. Just go here:

Johnny U, way ahead of his time. One of the best QBs ever.

Im with you, Sam. Except I put him at the top. Everyone else is playing for second.

Can’t disagree with putting him at the top. He was the true master.
