Why Giants may be better off at quarterback than you think

Former Giants’ GM Ernie Accorsi knows quarterbacks.

He drafted John Elway in Baltimore. He drafted Bernie Kosar in Cleveland. And he drafted Eli Manning in New York. So when he assesses a team’s situation at quarterback, you better listen … and we did when Accorsi evaluated the Giants on the latest Talk of Fame Network podcast.

Essentially, he thinks they’re in good shape at the game’s most important position because: A) He believes that, given a strong supporting cast, Manning can still win, and B) he likes what just happened in their draft … and he wasn’t talking just about landing Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. Nope, it went much deeper — to a quarterback who flew so far under the radar the Giants found him in the fourth round with the 108th pick.

“The steal of their draft might be a quarterback — Kyle Lauletta from Richmond,” Accorsi said. “That kid walks into the Senior Bowl … and I know the Senior Bowl is like an all-star game. Yet with all those big names he walks away with the MVP award.

“The only thing he does not have is a howitzer. But neither did Montana. Neither did Garopplo. Neither did Brady when he came out. You can increase arm strength. But he’s got everything else. He’s got footwork. He’s got the great release. He’s a winner. He’s taken teams down the field (in the last two minutes).

“I know the coach at Albany said when the game was over, ‘He beat me in the fourth quarter two straight years. I went over to him to make sure he has no eligibility left.’ I really think that was a great pick. I was hopeful they’d pick him in the third round because they had two threes, and they passed on him. Fortunately, he was there in the fourth.”

Lauletta is not the only young quarterback behind Manning. Former Cal quarterback Davis Webb, last year’s third-round pick, is there, too. And he’s the guy former teammate Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie last year described as “a young Eli Manning.”

For the moment, Webb, Lauletta and Alex Tanney are the backups to Manning, with the smart money on Webb and Lauletta as the second and third options.

“They now have doubled their bets,” Accorsi said of the Giants. “They have two prospects, and they could hit (on) one of those two.”
