Poll Question – Fear Factor

Who was the most feared linebacker ever to play the game?

Dick Butkus – Went to the Pro Bowl each of his first eight seasons before a knee injury prematurely ended his career after nine years. Intercepted 22 career passes and recovered 25 fumbles.

Jack Lambert – Went to nine consecutive Pro Bowls and owns four Super Bowl rings. Two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year with 28 career interceptions and 17 fumble recoveries in 11 seasons.

Ray Lewis – Went to 13 Pro Bowls and was credited with 1,562 tackles for his career. NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 when Ravens won Super Bowl. Intercepted 31 career passes with 20 fumble recoveries.

Lawrence Taylor – One of only two defenders ever named NFL MVP in 1986. Went to 10 Pro Bowls, won two Super Bowls and a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Became the prototype edge rusher with his 132 ½ career sacks.

Lambert would crush Taylor like a small child.
Lewis is a murderer / accomplice.
Butkus was the real deal but could have used a few more good seasons to solidify his standing with multiple generations of fans

All these guys were great. Taylor was a great pass rush LB, but But us was said to have put the fear of God into his opponents. How many guys do you know that calls time out at the end of a game so he could get one last hit on someone?

I saw a game in the 1960s when Butkus ran a guy out of bounds, through the bench area, up a stair and through an open wrought iron gate into the stands at Wrigley Field. The man played football with an attitude.

Butkus always said his dream was to make the game=saving tackle on the final play of the Super Bowl and then die on the field. Name me another player who would choose that ending? He was the most fearsome LB I ever saw and he played in an era where the rules allowed him to be.

Butkus and LT now in a dead heat for most feared LB of all-time. That says much about Butkus who hasn’t played in decades and lived before the era of hype began.

I vote for Lambert. He lost a lot of teeth, which says to everybody, “If you mess with me, you are going to lose your teeth.” The other guys had teeth, right?
