The Houston Texans gave J.J. Watt their vote as the best defensive player in the NFL a year ago when they bestowed a six-year, $100 million contract on him.

Now the readers and listeners of the Talk of Fame Network have weighed in, voting Watt as their preseason choice for the 2015 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Watt received almost 59 percent of the vote on a ballot that also included NFL sack leader Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs, fellow $100 million defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh of the Miami Dolphins, and Pro Bowl cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman. Houston finished a distant second with 29.4 percent of the vote.

Watt was the easy choice. He finished as the runnerup in the NFL MVP voting a year ago to Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the strength of his 20 ½ sack season. He also recovered five fumbles, forced four others, returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown and caught three passes in goal-line formation on offense for three more scores.

Watt has gone to three Pro Bowls in his four years and has posted a pair of 20-plus sack seasons. And he is only 26 years of age. Wait until he hits his prime…
