Talk of Fame Network

Peyton Manning is off to the worst start since his rookie year with more interceptions (seven) than touchdown passes (six) through Denver’s first five games.

The Broncos rank 30th in the NFL in rushing, 23rd in passing, 30th in offense and 14th in points. Despite the offensive struggles, Denver shares the NFL’s best record at 5-0 along with Atlanta, Cincinnati and Green Bay, all of whom rank in the Top 10 in offense.

That’s because no one in the NFL is playing better defense these days than the Broncos. They have the most sacks, most takeaways and the No. 1-ranked defense in the league. Edge rushers DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller are both having Pro Bowl seasons. But is this the best defense in the NFL?

The New York Jets have allowed the fewest points this season, riding a shutdown coverage tandem of cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. The Seattle Seahawks have pitched the NFL’s only shutout this season. The Jets rank second in the league in defense and the Seahawks fifth — and the arrow is pointing up in Seattle with the return of Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor, who sat out the first two games in a contract dispute.

The Tennessee Titans rank third in the NFL in defense but first against the pass, thanks in large part to the rush of Jerrell Casey and Derrick Morgan. The Arizona Cardinals rank ninth in the NFL in defense but lead the league with 11 interceptions, three more than anyone else. Safeties Rashad Johnson and Tyrann Mathieu have combined for five of those picks.

Despite all the rules that are stacked in favor of the offense, there is still some great defense being played in the NFL. But who has the best defense in the league?
